What's even better, when folded and organized, I can actually see (and plan) my inventory. I still have several more boxes of fabric to sort and fold, but I'm finding all kinds of surprises. I haven't started on my fabric closet yet, but I've made MAJOR improvement in other areas.
What a nifty idea to fold and organize our sewing areas! Everyone's progress has been very motivating!
Unexpected Benefits of Organizing Fabric
One thing I didn't expect from this project was how many forgotten treasures I would discover. As I sorted through boxes and shelves, I found fabrics I had purchased years earlier and completely forgotten about. Some pieces were perfect for doll clothes, while others inspired entirely new sewing projects. I also still have fabric from when I used to sew McDonald Clown costumes. There were lots of red and yellow fabric!
For anyone with a large fabric collection, organization is about more than saving space. It also helps prevent duplicate purchases and makes project planning much easier. Instead of digging through piles of fabric, I can now quickly see colors, prints, and materials at a glance.
Why Many Sewers Fold Fabric
Many quilters, doll-clothes designers, and garment makers fold fabric onto uniform boards because it maximizes storage space and creates a neat, easy-to-view inventory. In my case, I discovered that folded fabric allowed me to store several times more fabric on a single shelf than fabric stacked loosely in boxes.
I do enjoy keeping most of my fabric on bolts (I'll ask businesses like Hobby Lobby if I can take entire bolt without them taking it apart) but for those smaller pieces, folding keeps them unwrinkled and doesn't it look better on photo above?
Although I still have a long way to go, this project has already made my sewing area more functional and enjoyable. Sometimes the biggest projects are completed one shelf at a time!

Don't you just love being able to run your eyes down the fabric and see at a glance just what you're looking for? and all those surprise finds are so much fun.
Keep posting pic's, I'm enjoying them.
Oh wow! Look at that gorgeous fabric! You have a very nice blog! It's nice to meet a fellow sewer, although I must admit, I'm not the greatest sewer around. I do love to sew though, so hopefully in time I will improve. Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday!
