Meet Sheba: Why Every Homestead Needs a Good Dog
Sometimes the newest member of the family deserves a blog post all her own.
Meet Sheba, our newest companion and future homestead helper.
Although we originally brought Sheba home simply because we wanted another dog to love, she quickly became much more than a family pet. Before long she was following us around the garden, keeping us company while we worked outdoors, and faithfully watching over the backyard.
More Than Just a Pet
One thing I've learned over the years is that a good dog becomes part of everyday homestead life.
Whether I'm gardening, building a chicken coop, harvesting vegetables, or simply enjoying a quiet evening outside, Sheba always wants to be nearby.
Dogs also provide:
- Faithful companionship
- An early warning when someone approaches the property
- Protection for livestock and poultry (depending on the breed and training)
- Encouragement to spend more time outdoors
- Endless entertainment with their unique personalities
A Dog's Place on the Homestead
As our little homestead grew, so did Sheba's responsibilities.
She eventually learned to respect our chickens, patrol the backyard, and let us know whenever squirrels or unexpected visitors arrived. Like any good farm dog, she believed it was her job to supervise every project.
Looking back, I can't imagine our homestead without her.
Some animals provide eggs.
Some provide vegetables.
Some simply provide joy.
Sheba has always been one of our greatest blessings.

Oh, how sweet! What made you want a dog?
So cute! How big will she get?
Just a medium sized dog. We didn't want a "horse" in the house ;-)
Patty, we wanted a dog for home protection and for companionship.
