FIRST DAY OF SPRING in Texas: Gardening, Wildflowers, and Homesteading

Springtime Pioneer!

Today was an absolutely STUNNING day. It was a balmy 70+ degrees, with puffy white clouds and warm sunshine. I spent the day dreaming of our next road trip. Time to purchase another Texas State Park's pass, and dig out the roadmap. We're already planning a trip to the coast in a few short weeks!

Signs That Spring Has Arrived in Texas

Spring is one of my favorite seasons in Texas. Warmer temperatures bring gardens back to life, wildflowers begin blooming, and backyard birds become much more active. It's also the perfect time to prepare vegetable gardens before the intense summer heat arrives.

Some of my favorite spring projects include:

  • Starting tomato and pepper seedlings.
  • Planting colorful flowers such as zinnias and cleome.
  • Cleaning out garden beds and adding fresh compost.
  • Watching butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds return to the yard.
  • Planning road trips to Texas State Parks while the weather is still comfortable.

Why I Always Plant Zinnias

If I had to recommend one easy flower for beginning gardeners, it would probably be the zinnia. They bloom continuously through much of the growing season, attract butterflies and other pollinators, make beautiful cut flowers, and tolerate Texas heat surprisingly well.

Spring Is a Time for Fresh Starts

Spring isn't just for gardens—it's also a wonderful time to organize the house, donate unused items, start new hobbies, and make plans for the months ahead. Whether it's planting a vegetable garden, taking a road trip, or simply enjoying more time outdoors, spring always feels like a fresh beginning.

I've also been SPRING CLEANING. For the first time in a LONG TIME, I dropped donations off at the Goodwill. This means that I'm actually making PROGRESS in cleaning out my closets!

I've also been staring at my windowsills and thinking about all those packets of seeds I had intended to plant before spring. A few weeks back I had purchased cherry tomatoes, Zinnias, green bell peppers, etc., etc... Perhaps I will get those little pots started this week and place them in my window.

Zinnia's are one of my favorite flowers to plant as they keep blooming and blooming and blooming!

I absolutely adore the CLEOME flowers, or as some call them, spider plants. They are drought tolerant, and grow up to 6 feet tall. These annuals return each year and are very hardy. I love'm!

Of course, I can't help but plant batches of mammoth sized Sunflowers. These plants are interesting as they turn their faces towards the sun and droop their heads when they are thirsty!

Zinnia's are one of my fav's too but their a hard runner up for those sunflowers. I expecially love the way the sunflowers bring all the Cardinals and Canaries out to eat the seeds.
